House fires kill more Australians than all natural hazards

Residential fires claim more Australian lives annually than all other natural disasters combined, including floods, storms, and bushfires. A sobering fact, often overshadowed by the spotlight on the dramatic and deadly bushfires that engulf the country during our scorching Australian summers.

This alarming statistic underscores the need for a shift in focus towards preventing fatalities in residential fires, which tragically claim the lives of over fifty Australians each year. Importantly, it’s worth noting that the vast majority of these deaths are entirely preventable.

A comprehensive study, generously supported by Macquarie University in collaboration with the Bushfire and Natural Hazards Co-operative Research Centre, delved into fourteen years of coronial records across the nation. Its findings reveal a disconcerting stability in the residential fire death rate over the past decade, with vulnerable populations such as the elderly, disabled, young, and those living alone bearing the brunt of these tragedies.

Significantly, a substantial portion of these fatalities occurs during the night, with over a third of the victims being aged over 65.
